2025 Summary

Trying to see if I can manage to complete a few projects this year.

Sold my 10 years old Squier Stratocaster, bought a Strandberg Standard N2.6.

Continued to listen to Christian Merlin "Au choeur de l'orchestre" and "Guitare, Guitare" podcasts.

Big fan: Edgar-Yves Monnou (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar-Yves ; https://www.youtube.com/@edgar-yves-officiel )

Music "Glass Gaze" Trio guitar, drums. 

Very interesting book: "Voyager dans les philosophies du monde" by Roger-Pol Droit.

This year maybe I will add the festival I attended:

  • Les Rencontres de Calenzana (In Corsica) 
    • Various Classical ensembles in beautiful (but difficult to locate and access) spots. 
  • Drôme de Guitare (In Valence - FR)
    • Just stayed one day. Focus on Classical. Much tinier than Issoudun. 
  • 7th Flute International Convention - (LA TRAVERSIERE - The french flute association)  
    • 4 days very intense in Paris. Its every 3 years. 
    • So many great artists and very diverse, from baroque to jazz, piccolo to octoflute... and more.
    • Duo Ziriab: such nice energy. (They worked with Mathias Duplessy)
      • Yamandu Costa definitely had some influence ...
      • CNSM does not mean you are restricted to classical
    • Peter VERHOYEN (Piccolo)  such incredible and unexpected artist! 
    • « Flûtes graves » Orchestre de flûtes RÉSONANCES XXI with Gareth Mc LEARNON and  Tilmann DEHNHARD 
      • Octo Flute and else ...
    • "The new flute" conference by Tilmann DEHNHARD . Very inspiring.
    • "Flute moderne et Impro" by Yann Clery a short history of flute after 1920 (Jazz, Trad, Politics, Musics ...)
      • His performance "Yann Solo" was a shock in the convention's context, but why not.
    • "Musique Caribéennes" with Olivier Ombredane, very entertaining guy.
    • L'ensemble Vibrations+ with the excellent Lydie Thonnard (On YouTube).
    • Concerts:  Mario Bruno, Julien Beaudiment,  Anais Benoit ... exceptional flutists 
      • Many others, but too many to list them all ...
    • Last but not least: Emmanuel Pahud: a true legend, simple and stunning.

First I have goals listed in different places, but did not move forward on any ... :

Après midi

« Impressions d’Argentine », premier album du Quatuor L’Esquisse, met en lumière l’œuvre du compositeur et flûtiste argentin Enzo Gieco à travers une version pour flûtes en ut, alto, basse et piccolo.  Il s’agit d’une invitation dans l’univers des danses folkloriques. Les rythmes « Porteños » de la ville de Buenos Aires sont également illustrés parmi les œuvres de Carlos Gardel, Angel Villoldo, Pablo Aguirre et les nouvelles compositions de Martin Kutnowski. L’évocation de Piazzolla est incontournable avec son célèbre « Oblivion ».

Un voyage musical au cœur de l’Europe du XVIIIe siècle. De la grâce viennoise de Mozart à l’élégance classique de Haydn, en passant par le souffle expressif du Berlinois G.A. Schneider, ce programme met en lumière la richesse et la diversité du répertoire pour flûte et cordes.

    Jeudi 21 Août 

    Le Rondo espressivo de Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach ouvre le concert avec ses élans imprévisibles et sa liberté de ton, suivi par la poésie solitaire de la Fantaisie pour violon de Telemann. 
    La célèbre Passacaille de Haendel, revisitée par Halvorsen pour violon et violoncelle, offre un moment de virtuosité incandescente.

    Enfin, le trio à cordes en do mineur op.9 n°3 de Beethoven clôture ce voyage en concentrant toute la fougue de la jeunesse du compositeur dans une œuvre puissante, tendue et d’une grande richesse expressive.

     Well, I just checked previous year's post and I have nothing more to add.

    • Just I was using a Weekly Planner (Moleskine Weekly planner 13x21) for 2 years, but I decided to stop and go back to plain notebook. I do not need a planner and writing is easier on plain notebook.
    • Also I do not own a car anymore 
    • I read more books 
    • I stopped teaching at CNAM (online teaching "Network and Security", what else ...)

    I should say that my personal life has seen more drastic changes, but nothing I want to develop here.

    Note taking, journaling, second brain ... which application?

     I am always searching for a note taking app that would allow me to organize my notes.

    It is always easy to take notes, to add tags and add more stuff.

    The issue is to have a return on investment. What do we gain from typing all these notes and trying to tag them?  If it is a big mess after a year, it is better to take notes on paper (for instant gratification) and leave it to Google to find th info on Internet a few years later.  You can then take new notes on paper ...

    I have been using Workflowy for years. It was very quick, simple and reliable. And Free to use.

    Then I switched to Roam last year. There was so much hope (and hype?).  Today other similar applications (Workflowy typically) feature the same backlinks. And Workflowy is faster. 

    Today I might leave Roam. What I am lacking is still

    • a User Experience that would facilitate organization, structuration. 
    • a way to publish some of the hierarchy to a blog or Static Site

    I am looking to Foam and Dendron and LogSeq.  But adding content to them is not as seamless as with Workflowy or Roam.

    Fedora Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Audio Creation / Music


    Hoping to revive the Fedora Audio Creation SIG. (or at least to update/delete a few Wiki pages)

    The prominent figure in "Fedora Audio" is Brendan Jones

    There is the outdated "Fedora Jam":  https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_jam
    Mostly active in 2012~2014, but there are update in 2017 too!

    Fedora Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Audio Creation https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Audio_Creation . Many (all?) Wiki pages are obsolete (relates to Fedora 14) and contains dead links.

    MuseScore really shows that Fedora could do better, there many broken links and for example:  Distribution maintainers Fedora's link is broken and the 2 persons listed show no activities for the last 6 years.
    Looks like the current packager is Orcan Ogetbil, according to the changelog. I hope to progress on this topic.

    DrumGizmo RPM

    Install packages
    sudo dnf install fedora-packager

    and add yourself to group mock, logout, login.  (See references at the end.)

    rpmdev-setuptree will create the ~/rpmbuild structure (from any location, it is a super old shell script!)

    Either specify an URL in the source or specify just a file.
    IF you just specify a file:
    - Download the sources   spectool -R -g ../SPECS/drumgizmo.spec   will download in  SOURCES/ ...


    Before DrumGizmo, we have to build LibSmf-Devel because this dependency is not in standard repos.
    Note: Using  make --disable-cli ... in DrumGizmo spec file allow to bypass libsmf issue ...   But the Drumgizmo command line tool can be useful.

    libsmf     is  a serious problem. Should really be included in Fedora!


    LibSmf is really a simple library with very few dependencies and the spec file is already OK. We can create the RPM and then Mock allows to  Build packages that depend on packages not in a repository.

    1/ Build All LibSmf:  rpmbuild -ba SPECS/libsmf.spec

    2/ Prepare your DrumGizmo source RPM: rpmbuild -bs SPECS/drumgizmo.spec

    3/ Install the RPMs in mock and build (note: libsmf-devel requires libsmf):
    mock --init
    mock --install RPMS/x86_64/libsmf{-devel,}-1.3.692e728-3.fc28.x86_64.rpm
    mock --no-clean --rebuild SRPMS/drumgizmo-0.9.15-1.fc28.src.rpm 

    You get the idea, by default mock would clean the environment. So here we init, install out RPM and build the new one while keeping our installed RPM. 
    The idea is to:

    1. modify the drumgizmo  spec
    2. rebuild the source RPM
    3. test with mock if the rpm build

    You can rebuild multiple times with --no-clean, but in the end, be sure to test from init.


    Once everything build OK.  Try on your own PC...
      sudo dnf install ./RPMS/x86_64/libsmf-1.3...rpm  and libsmf-devel
      rpmbuild -ba SPECS/drumgizmo.spec

    I had a QA "minor issue" with hard coded rpath '/usr/lib64'. I did not find other solution than to ignore it:
      QA_RPATHS=0x0001 rpmbuild -ba SPECS/drumgizmo.spec

    sudo dnf install ./RPMS/x86_64/drumgizmo...rpm

    Done. 

    Note: the plugin is installed for everyone, in /usr/lib64/lv2.  If you follow the Drumgizmo guide, it will be installed only in your own ~/.lv2/ directory.

    Beware that maybe the DrumGizmo plugin and its host (Ardour typically) require the same lib versions. At least, I read that it could be an issue sometimes.

    Also Geogebra (https://www.geogebra.org/) is almost there, if only its interface was not so complicated. It is a shame that this tool has not more success!

    Encoding/Decoding in Java 9 using javax.xml.bind or not

    DatatypeConverter and Java 9

    If you used to do conversions, like

    import javax.xml.bind.DatatypeConverter;
    ...

    byte[] bin = DatatypeConverter.parseHexBinary("0769cc");


    With Java 9 you will get errors, since javax.xml.bind is no longer in the module path, it is considered part of Java Enterprise. With Java 10 it may even be removed from the JRE.

    It is a known problem:

    There are many solutions: Rewriting the function or Using command line option to load the library at runtime ...  But the most robust and long term one seems to be adding the dependency to your project.

    Here I will focus on adding the dependency:
